#SoberNotBoring Guest Post – Forever the Wanderer

Hello everyone! Continuing with #SoberNotBoring, we are hearing from Anne aka Forever the Wanderer. This is a really powerful piece and a tough read, so thank you Anne for having the courage to tell your story.

#SoberNotBoring – Forever the Wanderer

I’m not a huge drinker and I have many reasons for not drinking. All throughout my childhood I watched my father binge drinking everyday that he wasn’t in work. I grew up with a violent, abusive man who enjoyed drinking all the time. Drinking has always been a huge part of my dad’s side of the family. It was disgusting.

The smell of alcohol off his breath, his blood shot eyes and his bright red cheeks with purple veins popping out wasn’t fun when he was in my face screaming for one reason or another. Constantly having that happening has completely turned me off alcohol.

Drinking scares me and being around people who are drinking terrifies me. I struggled in the pub/ restaurant that I worked in during the weekends. Alcohol has always been and always will be a huge trigger for me. Alcohol can change people and make them unpredictable.

That’s what scares me. My advice to anyone going out is not to let anyone pressure you into drinking if you don’t want to or go beyond your limit if you aren’t comfortable. My second piece of advice is to make sure you trust the people you are out drinking with. Please be careful and take care of yourself.

Alcohol affects you and your body in so many ways. Please be careful and remember this: you don’t need alcohol to go out and have fun. Being sober is not boring. You can have just as much fun or more fun while being sober.

My new YouTube video was published on Saturday. I’d love to hear your thoughts on all blogging-related things in the video.

I hope you all have a great week and for those of you going sober for October, you can do this!
